Living Water

The photograph above was taken in South Dakota. This state is in the middle of a drought; earth’s dehydration. The grass is dry and crunchy below our feet. I could almost hear the flora and fauna cry out “I am thirsty!”

The kind VRBO owner of the South Dakota home we stayed in offered refreshment to any two or four legged creature that would receive this free gift. No charge, tolls, or puzzle to solve. No secret door or code to break. It wasn’t hidden away or camouflaged, but available to any and all who would just come.

Isn’t our creator offering this same blessing to all of us? He is a generous, kind provider. His well of mercies and nourishment never runs dry. He does not hide himself, and does not make us navigate a maze to maneuver the path, but provides a path that is clearly marked and straight.

He himself is this Well, and Fountain of Life. Our task is to come to Him, acknowledge our thirst, and needs which only He can provide. There is no substitute for what He offers. We come and He provides.

As thirst is often the first sign of dehydration, emptiness, longing for more and dissatisfaction. These are sure signs of our need for the true Giver of Life.

Have you noticed that the relationship you’ve always dreamed of, or that new car, new home or the latest, greatest tech can only relieves your thirst for a brief time? You may think a make over, more money in the bank or advance in your career will be that permanent satisfier, completer of your life. But it’s temporary isn’t it?

In his book “The Screwtape Letters,” author C.S. Lewis described a God-shaped vacume that exists in our heart. Events, experiences, relationships and toys can give us moments of happiness and satisfaction, but only moments. The rule of diminishing returns certainly applies to earthy pleasures, but never to the soul-satisfying presence of God.

I have days when I am flitting about, drawn to those temporary satisfactions this life offers. Meanwhile there is a fountain of life which awaits me to dive into the true and lasting water of life. It is His presence, His word.

When I finally admit that my own well dries up very quickly, that it is only a mirage compared to the true and living fountain of life, I remember it was always there waiting patiently for me.

Friends…have you yet to see your own self-sufficiency leaves you dry and thirsty? Come with me to the well that never runs dry and will always satisfy. He is waiting with open arms.

Blessing in your journey,

Karen
